We are very thankful to be starting the week with a Manly Monday interview with Chris Hogg! Chris has been a stylist at Epic Salon in Encino for the last four years, and he is also an Insider for Paul Mitchell’s Giving is My Style philanthropy campaign. Listen up, fellas! He’s got some great tips (…and not just about hair). At the end of the interview, watch a YouTube tutorial of Chris as he teaches us two manly looks!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m just a boy from Agoura Hills and I enjoy the outdoors. I love surfing. It’s my daily medication.
I’ve been a stylist at Epic Salon for four years now, and I like every aspect of the salon. My number one priority is developing relationships and learning from my clients. If I can make each one of my clients look and feel better on their way out than they did on their way in – I’m a happy camper.
Tell us about your daily routine.
I try and get a surf in, and I shower and shave everyday. Moisturize right out of the shower, get dressed next and then cologne and deodorant. Make a quick bite, make lunch and fill up my S’well Water Bottle. Next up – put on my playlist and drive to the salon. I always do my hair when I get to the salon.
Paul Mitchell will donate 1$ each time someone posts and tags #givingismystyle. Giving back is a huge part of the Paul Mitchell culture, and they are trying to put out there that it’s not that hard to give back: using a hashtag is all you have to do this holiday season. I was contacted by Paul Mitchell to be a PM Insider, and I was immediately was stoked on this opportunity.
Give us a down and dirty list of your favorite products.
Do you believe beauty products have come a long way?
Yes. I think the men’s industry is at an all time high. I love that men have the options with products now to achieve multiple different looks with the same cut. I feel like gel and pomade were the only products really used, and now we have clays, creams, sprays, fibers etc.
I believe and hope that one day the men’s selection of products will be up there with the women’s product selection.
Ever made a cringe-worthy beauty faux pas?
Yes, multiple. Shaving my beard way to short or uneven is heart breaking.
I’ve definitely bleached or colored my hair and after 2 days realize it was the wrong move.

We just couldn’t be more honored and excited to have Philippe Morgese, founder of Daddy Daughter Hair Factory and dad extraordinaire here for Manly Mondays! Philippe is doing such great work for families in his Daytona community, and he just couldn’t be more warm and awesome about sharing with our Beauty Bus readers. Let’s meet Philippe and hear more about D.D.H.F!
1. Tell me about your the Daddy Daughter Hair Factory and how it started.
The Daddy Daughter Hair Factory was a late night thought I had when I found myself thinking about a friend that I knew was struggling with hair. I started messaging my friend’s with daughters to see if they would be interested in learning how to do hair. All of them said they would come to a class if I put one together. At this point I started contacting people I knew in the salon business to see if anyone would lend me the space to hold a class. After a few people said no and some people ignored my request, I had a friend mention the international academy for hair in South Daytona. I contacted the owner, Mez and he was very receptive to the idea. So I set a date and winged it.
2. How did you find other fathers who were interested? How did you spread the word?
I had a few friends that were able to make it and I made a post on my Facebook about looking for dads that wanted to learn hair, the class filled up that day.
3. What sort of feedback do you get from fathers and daughters who have participated?
The response has been fantastic! The daughter’s are requesting the dad to do hair and the dads are sharing pictures online. It’s very heartwarming for me to see the influence it has on their lives.
4. How did you learn all of your hair trickery?
I’ve learned my hair skills from watching tutorials on YouTube and recreating styles from pictures I saw online. It started with very basic ponytails but over the years of doing her hair every day, I learned a thing or two 😉
5. What are your favorite products and accessories?
I’m in love with So Cozy products. They are sold at target or online, but I found the extra cost to be worth it. Emma loves their detangler and their brush. I also like using the styling cream to control fly away hairs :).
6. What would you tell and dad who might be intimidated about working with his daughters hair?
Learn how to detangle properly and get the tools you need.
7. What does beauty mean to you?
Real beauty is a confidence that shines from the inside out. I wouldn’t consider myself a beauty expert, but I find happiness to be very beautiful and when I do my daughter’s hair, it makes her happy :).
I’m currently doing bi-weekly classes in my town to help dads out, and I’m attempting a few mom and daughter classes to see if they can benefit.
I’m not a professional, I’m not even that good at teaching. I have a big heart though and my intentions are good, so I let those things guide me. I’m also grateful that my daughter is happy to help. She really is the rock behind it all

We are so excited to have Dev with us today! Dev is also a RYT-500 Yoga instructor and Reiki Practitioner. (Can we say, well-rounded?)

What is your out the door routine?

Favorite grooming products? Hair, skin or otherwise?
Do you think men’s beauty products have come a long way? Examples?
Well, yes. 20 or 30 years ago, men weren’t really using moisturizers and eye creams and all of that. Today there are so many products on the market geared specifically for men, it’s crazy. In general men are just more knowledgable about, and open to, using “beauty” products. It’s easier to research products on our own and the products are easier to buy, even if we don’t want to make our purchase in a brick-and-mortar store.
I think this is driven by the fact that people are taking better care of themselves in general and we all live in a world in which our age doesn’t necessarily define us anymore.
Any recommendations for thinning hair?
Use products that help maintain a healthy scalp while helping to clear debris from the hair follicles themselves, like Bosley Pro. Also, wash you hair after working up a sweat. More sweat can lead to more sebaceous oils in the follicles and to an increase in D.H.T., a cause of thinning.
Ever make a man beauty faux pas?
Yes. I once wore so much cologne to an event, many years ago, that I was gagging. I could smell myself the whole time. Just gross.
Cologne, yes or no? Reccs?
Brings back my youthful memories of my days behind the fragrance counter at Saks Fifth Avenue/NY. Cologne is fine, just don’t over do it (see above). Tip: Spray the cologne in front of you and walk through it. Should be enough. Personally, I like the old hippy Nag Champa or Patchouli oils, myself.
What does beauty mean to you?
I think beauty is all about being respectfully and completely comfortable in your own skin, wherever and whoever you are.

What is your favorite hair product for men?
Bumble and bumble’s Grooming Creme. It gives the right amount of weight with a satin finish, memory and provides a more lived in look. I also love DrySpun Finish. It’s instant gratification for fullness and body.
What can men do if they have thinning issues?
Use the new Full Potential System from Bumble and bumble to keep your strands fuller, stronger and stay with you longer.
What is your out the door routine? Favorite products? Hair or otherwise?
Lately I have been using Tonic Lotion and Don’t Blow It. The tonic has an old school barber shop feel (peppermint and tea tree) and is a great way to re-style existing looks and is a great primer. Don’t Blow It is perfect for the minimalist on the go. It gives body, fights frizz and has no product feel at all while somehow achieving that effortless look.
Cologne, yes or no? Reccs?
Yes. I wear Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford.
What does beauty mean to you?
Finding your own style and owning it. Beauty to me is confidence and not playing it safe.

Stacey Ellis, is a successful owner of her own salon, Ellis Salon. With 18 years of experience as a hairstylist and makeup artist, she has provided her skills as a Beauty Professional at the foundation and has helped made our clients feel as special as they are.

Q: How did you hear about Beauty Bus Foundation?
A: I saw Beauty Bus on the show, Secret Millionaire and my salon owner at that time had been to an event and told us about it in a staff meeting. I was hooked!
Q: How long have you been with the foundation?
A: About 4 years. I offer hair and makeup services.
Q: What inspired you to volunteer?
A: Like too many people, I lost a dear friend to cancer at 21 years of age in which I understand the importance of giving that loved one a little day to day normality. Feeling beautiful on the outside may only be a temporary relief from how they are feeling inside, but it’s a relief and a distraction at the same time. Over the years, I have also helped clients of my own going through treatments with home haircuts and other services so I felt I would be able to help at Beauty Bus.
Q: Why did you decide to pursue cosmetology?
A: I was interested in hair, makeup and fashion as a teenager so my parents encouraged me to pursue something creative. I left high school and went straight to hair school, and then makeup school at the age of 17.
Q: What was your first In-Home Visit or Pop-Up Salon like?
A: There have been so many, that I can’t really remember the first ever visit, it’s all a blur of smiling faces. I tend to go in happy and up beat and everyone seems so happy to see the Beauty Bus team. They are always so grateful and you can see that it’s a great distraction for them, we always have a wonderful time!
Q: Is there something you walk away with from these visits and Pop-ups?
A: It’s just like when I do someone’s hair or makeup in the salon and see how pleased they are, it’s just as rewarding to see that on the In-Home Visits or Pop-ups, also.
Q: Has volunteering for Beauty Bus Foundation changed your perspective on beauty?
A: No, not really. I treat everyone the same when it comes to what I do. I see past [the] illness and wheel chairs and look straight to the people which is why I do this. All I need to see is that smile from ear to ear at the end and I know my job is done.

Q: What interested you in getting involved with Beauty Bus Foundation?
A: My mother had breast cancer and I know what a devastating illness or disease it is to experience. As a hair stylist, I know how important it is to go through this and I think the Beauty Bus Foundation is a great opportunity to have the experience of feeling good, as well for the caregiver while they are going through these difficult times.
Martha Carrillo is one of our beloved beauty buddies and she finds volunteering with the foundation rewarding. Here she is with her dog, Coco.
Q: How did you get involved with Beauty Bus?
A: I was looking for volunteer opportunities online, and I found Beauty Bus. I am in the beauty industry as well where I do book keeping for a company that sells beauty products and this just worked out for me.
Q: What inspired you to generally volunteer?
A: I was looking for something to do with my free time and this became really rewarding. I am really busy but it’s a good experience and is very rewarding.
Q: What are your roles at BBF?
A: I do office work, events and home visits.
Q: What was your first visit like?
A: My first visit was the hardest of all because it was in hospice care. The client’s caregiver told us she only had a couple of weeks left and the client was in a state of denial, depression and couldn’t talk. It was very hard, but it was a significant experience. After that visit, the clients were happy and talkative.
Q: What do you like most about volunteering with BBF?
A: It’s the experience and the feeling of giving back.
Q: How has volunteering with BBF affected your life?
A: Sometimes I change my plans and do things to go and help when I get an email from BBF. When I see someone whom is ill, I see them differently. They are still full of life.
Q: Has BBF changed your perspective on beauty?
A: The industry all about perfection and now I see the human side and its deeper side where it’s about making someone feel good about themselves. With BBF you see a true effect on the person. It doesn’t feel like a job, but I can see a better side of my job.

Amanda comes to the Beauty Bus with a unique combination of experience in both the nonprofit and cosmetology industries. After graduating from California State University, Northridge with a degree in Psychology , Amanda gained several years of experience overseeing the volunteer program for a nonprofit organization that helps families transition out of homelessness. In 2011, she decided to pursue a lifelong interest in Cosmetology, and became a hair stylist.
After working in the cosmetology industry for three years, Amanda decided to combine her love for the beauty industry, with her passion for helping others, and has joined the Beauty Bus as our Community Outreach and Events Manager.

Beauty Bus Volunteers bring a big impact on the well-being of our clients and caregivers. So many of our clients’ mobility is based on assistance – walkers, wheel chairs, or mobile devices that also function as units for speaking. To make an appointment in a salon, prepare for the outing, get to the location and navigate through tight quarters in between inaccessible chairs or doorways can take all the excitement out of a day of beauty. Then there are clients in the midst of receiving treatments for a condition that takes all the strength and motivation one can muster, and even thinking about getting to the salon becomes a non-priority.
With all these obstacles, clients never give up their personal desire to feel good about themselves, even when the timing may not be right for a manicure or facial or even a much needed haircut. Think of all the ways that an in-home Beauty Professional and Beauty Buddy volunteer can ease the difficulties of managing these obstacles and make a real difference in the every day life of a Beauty Bus client, while creating a benefit for themselves:
Beauty Professional Volunteers deliver needed services for people that cannot access the specific services on their own — in-home clients appreciate the small boost that can be provided with a new hair style, the hair lifted off their neck after a fresh cut, a bright spot of color on their nails, the cleanliness of post-pedicure feet, the power of touch through a facial or seeing themselves again for the first time with a made-up face.
Beauty Professional Volunteers are offered an opportunity to practice their technical skills and interpersonal communication – two keys to a successful career in any field.
Beauty Professional and Beauty Buddy Volunteers keep clients and their caregivers connected to normalcy and the outside world – the freedom of the old routine missed since becoming home bound or exchanged for hospital visits.
Beauty Professional and Beauty Buddy Volunteers connect, build, support, engage and strengthen relationships with our clients who do the same in return. Many of our volunteers and clients form bonds through their time spent together in the clients’ home, and professionals are regularly requested to return.
Beauty Professional Volunteers not only gain regular clients, but can receive compensation for their time. A reduced rate for each service is offered to any licensed Beauty Professional and can be a nice compliment to income.
Volunteers contribute directly to their communities – whether a Beauty Professional or Buddy, our volunteers have a face-to-face interaction with clients, and can be assured that each moment spent together is a moment that positively impacts that client and caregiver’s life, as well as the volunteers.
Volunteers educate the public on the benefits of in-home beauty and grooming treatments – feeling good about oneself can work wonders on motivation and every day energy – and engage other potential volunteers to see what difference they can make. Why wouldn’t you share the things you love with the people in your life? Group volunteering can be fun, satisfying and bonding for everyone involved.
Volunteers assist in moving the organization forward – from organizing donated product to putting together Bags of Beauty to send out to clients living in other states to brainstorming new ways to help clients get the most out of Beauty Bus services, extra hands are always welcomed. Being a part of the growth of an organization can strengthen resolve, resumes and dedication to future tasks – all attributes of a positive volunteer experience.

Next time you visit the salon, get your nails done or stop by the makeup counter at the mall, consider asking how this person might be able to make a difference in the life of someone who cannot come to them. Consider the difference he/she would be making in their own life.

When one member of a family is terminally or chronically ill, especially a child, the whole family is affected – unexpected stress and finding a balance to meet everyone’s needs can be a big challenge.
For many siblings of children receiving treatment for terminal or chronic illness, being a child and being a caregiver is difficult and confusing. The role of caregiver can be overwhelming and an emotional strain for a young child or teen who shares a special bond with their sibling.
While each child yearns for normalcy, healthy siblings may suppress their need for individualized attention, lacking the maturity to express their needs. Although the tendency to focus attention on the ill child is normal, parents, too, must find a balance to provide the needed care for their ill child while also providing support for the entire family.
This June 24th, Sephora, Rancho Cucamonga, offered a strong presence with Beauty Bus Foundation at Loma Linda’s Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Clinic for Siblings Week – a week dedicated to supporting the caring siblings of children receiving treatment.
Through Sephora’s VIO Values Inside Out program, volunteers from the Rancho Cucamonga store and surrounding community participated at a Pop-Up Salon to provide makeup application, face painting, glimmer tattoos and haircuts to the families at the Loma Linda clinic.
During Monday’s event, healthy children visiting the clinic with their siblings were able to share in a bit of special attention and pampering through the caring touch of our volunteers. Mothers and children receiving treatment also shared in the fun, making an appointment for a new haircut, a coat of lipstick or a painted butterfly across the face. The bonding time was gift for all members of the family – a feeling of balance and having the focus on each most important person allowed stress to just melt away.
Everyone’s smile shone so brightly by the end of the event!
